NLG Health Philosophy

Holistic Health & Primary Food

A Holistic Approach to wellness is a complete approach to finding health, happiness and balance in your life ~ understanding that nourishment is not just about the food on our plate but what is happening in all areas of your life. Healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, a peaceful and happy home environment, regular physical activity and a spiritual awareness are all essential forms of nourishment that go beyond your diet. When these ‘Primary Foods’ are balanced, what you eat becomes secondary. ‘Primary Food’ is powerful because it helps bring awareness to the full picture of health. It reminds us to take a step back when we are feeling imbalanced and look at our health from a big picture perspective.

The NLG Health Plate

I try to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to my health. When it comes down to it, the average person needs MORE veggies, fruits, water, movement, and mindfulness. And LESS sugar, stress and processed foods. The NLG Health Plate emphasizes the importance of whole-foods, whole-grains, and high quality protein and fat- The Mediterranean Diet! Healthy bodies come in all sizes. The emphasis should be on proper nutrition, overall health and well-being and feeling strong mind, body and spirit.

Bio-Individuality

There is no one-size fits all diet. Each person is unique and each individual will differ in their nutritional needs based on their unique body, age, lifestyle, preference, and even ancestral background. This is why fad diets tend to fail in the long run. A bio-individual approach to health embraces flexibility and encourages experimentation to find what works best for YOU.

The “Crowding In” Method

The NLG Health Philosophy focuses on adding in healthy foods, habits, and thoughts and by doing this you will naturally create less space for less healthy habits. The more healthy foods, products, thoughts and practices you add in, the less space there will be for things that drain you. You will naturally “crowd out” the unhealthy and “crowd in” the healthy. It often feels easier and more enjoyable to add things in rather than take things away! This lifestyle is about ABUNDANCE not deprivation.

Sustainable Shifts

Many people are tempted to do a complete overhaul of their lives in their journey toward health and happiness. Changing too many things at once makes it hard to follow through with new habits and actions. Health and happiness is an on-going journey! Making sustainable shifts means experimenting with one new thing at a time and choosing to make changes that feel small but doable- things that you can sustain long-term. Small changes add up to big results over time!

Meditation & Mindfulness

Meditation is said to decrease stress, improve mental clarity, enhance energy, foster creativity, play a role in mindful eating, and improve decision-making skills. Meditation is an excellent tool to incorporate into your daily routine and I have tons of tools to get you started or to help you deepen your already established meditation routine!

Movement

Physical activity is an integral part of health and wellness. Prioritizing physical activity is an act of self-love and self-care. By carving out time to move your body, you’re giving yourself the gift of energy, focus, and strength. Your approach can be whatever works for you and is likely to change and evolve over time. The idea is to create space for movement in a way that feels natural, authentic, and enjoyable and adds to your overall quality of life!
